#Entrevista con Cristian Machado (Ill Niño) "Mi consejo a cualquier músico es encuentra un sonido y estilo que sea tuyo" [ESP/ENG]

Hace poco tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con el vocalista de Ill Niño, Cristian Machado, quien nos contó un poco sobre el concepto de "Till Death La Familia" el más reciente disco de la banda, sus consejos para bandas jóvenes, sus recuerdos de Chile y mucho más.

TMR: Primero que todo, gracias por concedernos esta entrevista. Actualmente se encuentran promocionando "Till Death La Familia", cuéntanos ¿Hay un concepto tras este disco?

Cristian: El titulo rinde tributo a todos los fans, amigos y familia que han estado con nosotros a lo largo de estos 15 años de carrera. La música es algo más profunda, ciertamente conecta con los sentimientos y aspectos que hemos atravesado en los últimos 15 años. Hemos madurado como personas desde nuestros humildes comienzos y nos sentimos muy agradecidos de seguir teniendo tantos fans afectuosos. Tal vez algunas de las historias reflejan eso de manera artística. Creativamente, queríamos expandirnos algo más, en vez de escribir canciones pegajosas, mientras nos divertíamos desafiándonos a nosotros mismos como músicos. Volví a trabajar personalmente con mi buen amigo Eddie Wohl y siempre es una experiencia maravillosa. Los chicos en la banda hicieron un trabajo fantástico escribiendo música, ya era fan de las canciones incluso antes de grabar las voces, las letras, las melodías.  Todo fue puesto a mi disposición, así que simplemente escribí. 

TMR: Sigamos hablando del disco, ¿Como sientes que fue recibido por los fans y la prensa?

Cristian: Los fans aman el disco. Ellos realmente conectaron con el mensaje de la música y las letras. Cada vez que tocamos "Blood Is Thicker Than Water" es casi una experiencia espiritual. No es que este predicando alguna fe, no es necesario que practiques ninguna fe para sentir tu espíritu. Esa canción enfatiza la muerte de una persona muy importante en mi vida. Creo que en general los fans que atraemos, son el tipo de gente que se conecta con nuestra música en un nivel sub-musical. La prensa ha estado bien, pero en nuestra defensa podemos decir que la prensa metal en general no cubre mucho a nuestra banda, ha sido así por años y continuamos con una asombrosa carrera internacional. Somos muy afortunados de haber cruzado las barreras culturales con nuestras canciones y haber causado un impacto a nivel mundial. Estamos muy agradecidos. Lamentablemente, la cobertura de prensa en regiones como Estados Unidos o el Reino Unido es muy baja. Aparecimos en un par de portadas, pero ahora la mayoría de publicaciones que seguimos cubren a lo que esta de moda. No los culpo. Yo no escribiría sobre mi. Soy una persona horrible al igual que mis otros 5 amigos criminales de Ill Niño. De hecho, somos ilegales y no tenemos visas de trabajo.

TMR: Recientemente lanzaron el vídeo de la canción "Blood is Thicker Than Water" que en tus palabras significa bastante para ti. ¿Hay otras canciones de Ill Niño que tengan una carga emocional similar?

Cristian: Claramente "Blood Is Thicker Than Water" desparrama un montón de emociones. Yo creo que es algo que alcanza al público y no solo a nosotros en el escenario. No es la primera vez que escribo sobre la muerte o el tema de "dejarlo ir", pero no muchas canciones evocan tal emoción. Tal vez podrían ser "How Can I Live" y "Unframed"

TMR: Sin lugar a dudas Ill Niño es una banda que no le tema a la experimentación e innovación, pero ¿Sientes que ha habido algún experimento musical de Ill Niño que haya salido mal?

Cristian: Si consideramos los ensayos o los demos de pre-producción como simples experimentos de laboratorio. Uno tendría que concluir que no todos los experimentos pueden ser eficaces. Así que, en ese sentido, no, no toda la experimentación es una gran idea, algunas cosas son solo fases y pasos musicales para llegar al siguiente nivel, algunas cosas son signos de increíble creatividad. Definitivamente, espero con ansias la siguiente oportunidad de experimentar. Creo que Oscar Santiago ha solidificado lo que llamamos nuestro "Latin Metal", tenemos ganas de seguir con eso.

TMR: Ill Niño es una banda que ha pasado años de gira y ha lanzado varios discos,  ¿Cual es el secreto para permanecer tanto tiempo en la industria musical? ¿que consejo le darías a las bandas que recién comienzan?

Cristian: Mi consejo a cualquier músico es encuentra un sonido y estilo que sea tuyo, tócalo con músicos que sean ligeramente mejores que tú. Entonces, prepárate para sacrificar todo lo de tu vida "normal" por  el amor a la música. En realidad no hay una formula o un secreto.Tener una marca única de lo que haces, que lo hagas bien y buscar los temas que merecen cobertura. En lo que se refiere Ill Niño, nuestro elemento y don,  esta en el cruce de las fronteras culturales y la aplicación de instrumentose instrumentación latina, acercar esos elementos al género de la música metal. De alguna manera hemos tratado de conectar con los fans en un nivel más espiritual, aunque sólo sea por un momento, creo que hemos conectado con fans de la música, no solo latinos. Lo que les ha permitido seguir en sus gustos incluso pasada su adolescencia (haha). no es raro conocer fans que han crecido con nosotros. 

TMR: ¿Cual es tu canción favorita para tocar en vivo?

Cristian: Blood is Thicker Than Water

TMR: A través de los años han sido catalogados como "Nu Metal" ¿Que piensan de ese concepto? ¿Te molesta? ¿Como definirías el sonido de Ill Niño en tus propias palabras?

Cristian: Realmente no he pensado en eso. No me interesa que subgénero exista en el presente o en cualquier tendencia. Creo que debería ser nostálgico, pero no es algo que venere demasiado. Me quedo con el toque creativo y libre de esa frecuencia. Solía prestar atención a ese tipo de cosas, pero ya no. Lo que sé, es que el "Latin Metal" es lo que mejor nos describe. Afortunadamente el mundo ha avanzado y nosotros también. 

TMR: ¿Cuando escucharemos otro tema de Ill Niño completamente en español?

Cristian: Esperamos que en el próximo disco.

TMR: Han estado en Chile más de una vez. ¿Que recuerdos tienen sobre el país? ¿Cuando los veremos de nuevo?

Cristian: Recuerdo todos los shows, pero lo más importante es que los fans en Chile son fabulosos. Es un honor regresar a Chile. Tuvimos una asombrosa experiencia la primera vez que fuimos, además visitamos algunos de los pueblos costeros, lugares muy pero muy hermosos. Gracias a toda la familia chilena de Ill Niño por todo el amor.

TMR: ¿Conoces algunas bandas chilenas?

Cristian: Bueno hay esta La Ley, también Los Prisioneros, y bueno unos grupos metaleros también como Necrosis, pero bueno se puede decir que no los escucho mucho

TMR: ¿Como es tu relación con Victory Records?

Cristian: Nos encanta Victory records. Tony y todo el equipo de Victory Records han sido muy amables con nosotros y queremos seguir trabajando con ellos.

TMR: ¿Cual es tu opinión acerca de la industria musical?

Cristian: Intento no pensar en eso, porque me da dolores de cabezas. Son tiempos malos, he de admitirlo. Pero honestamente la mejor manera de remediar la falta de recursos para bandas de mediano nivel es apoyando a tus bandas favoritas, apoya a las bandas locales también e involucrarte en la escena. Se que mucha gente no paga por los discos, pero son muy fans de la banda, siempre están en los shows, en contacto con la banda y su crecimiento.

TMR: ¿Hay planes para un nuevo disco?

Cristian: Absolutamente, estamos trabajando y tamizando algunas ideas.

TMR: Finalmente, este espacio es tuyo para que envíes un mensaje a todos tus fans latinoamericanos y de alrededor del mundo.

TMR:  First of all thank you very much for giving this interview. You are currently promoting your latest album "Till Death La Familia", tell us is there any concept behind this album?

Cristian: The title of the album essentially pays tribute to all the fans friends and family that have stuck by us through the 15 years we've been together. The music is a little bit more in depth and certainly gets into feelings and aspects of having gone through so much in the last 15 years. We've matured as people greatly since our humble beginning and we are very grateful to still have so many loving fans, perhaps some of the stories in this album reflect that in an artistic way. Creatively we felt like we wanted to expand a little bit more on simply writing catchy songs while also having some fun and challenging ourselves as musicians. I got to personally work with my good friend Eddie Wohl again and that's always a very awesome experience. The guys in the band did an amazing job writing music and I was very much a fan of all the songs before I even Laid down any vocals, the lyrics, the melodies, it all made itself available to me and simply wrote it all down. 

TMR: Let's continue talking about the album, how you feel it that has been received by fans and the press?

Cristian: The album is loved by our fans. They really connected with the message and the focus of the music and lyrics. It is always a near spiritual experience playing "blood is thicker than water" live. It's not that I'm preaching any faith, we don't necessarily need to follow a faith to feel your spirit. That song in particular really emphasize on the passing of a very important person in my life. I think in general the kind of fans we attract are people who can connect or try to connect with music on a sub-musical level. It's not meathead metal by far and well we all have something to say, I suppose. The press has been ok but to our defense, the general metal genre press really don't cover our band too much. It's been like that for many years and we've continued an amazing international career. We are very lucky to have crossed cultural boundaries with our songs and that made impact worldwide. We are very grateful. Sadly, in media driven regions like the USA or the UK, our coverage is very dim. Twas a time we fancied a cover or two but now most publications follow the seasonal trends, I don't blame them, I wouldn't write about me either, I am a horrible person as are my other 5 criminal friends in ILL NIÑO. Matter of fact, we're here illegally without any work visas.

TMR:Recently you released the video for the song "Blood Is Thicker Than Water," which in your own words has a great emotional burden for you. Are there other songs of Ill Niño that have such an emotional level?

Cristian: "Blood is thicker than water" certainly stirs up emotions, I think for everyone in the crowd not just us onstage. It's not the first time I've written about death or the topic of letting go but not many other songs evoke such emotions. "How can I live" certainly, as also "Unframed".

TMR: Undoubtedly Ill Niño is a band that is not afraid of experimentation and innovation, but  you feel that some of your musical experiments have gone wrong?

Cristian: If we consider the rehearsal space or pre-production demos are simply a laboratory experiment, one would have to conclude that not ALL experiments may be effective. So, in that sense, no, not all experimentation is a great idea, some things are phases and musical steps to get to the next place, some things are signs of amazing creativity. I definitely look forward to next shot at experimenting. I think Oscar Santiago has solidified what we call our "Latin Metal" and we look forward to coming out swinging!

TMR: Ill Niño has spent years on the road and have released a lot of albums, What is the secret to staying so long in the music industry? , What advice would you give to bands just starting

Cristian: My advice to any musician is find a sound and style that's your own and play with musicians that are slightly better than you. Then just be ready to sacrifice everything in your "normal" life for the love of music. There truly is no formula or secret. Have a unique brand of thing that you do, do it well, and seek topics that deserve coverage. As far as Niño is concerned, our element and gift was crossing cultural boundaries and applying Latin instruments and Latin instrumentation into this very narrow music genre, metal. In some way we attempted to connect with fans on a more spiritual level, even if just for a moment, and I think that connected a music loving fan not just Latinos. I suppose it has also allowed for them to love us past their teens! Hahahaha, it's not rare to meet fans that have grown up with us!

TMR: What are your favorite songs to play live?

Cristian: "Blood is thicker than water"

TMR: Over the years you have been labeled as "Nu Metal" What do you think of the concept? Does it bother you? How will define the sound of Ill Niño in your own words?

Cristian: It doesn't really cross my mind to be honest. I don't really care what sub genre category exists at the present time in any particular trend. I suppose it could be nostalgic but I don't revere in that too much. I'd like to stay creative and loose focus of that frequency. I used to pay attention but not anymore. Truly I know that "Latin Metal" at the very least describes some of what we do. Luckily the world has moved on and so have we.

TMR: When we hear another song entirely in Spanish from Ill Niño?

Cristian: Hopefully next album!

TMR:You have been more than once in Chile. What memories do you have about our country? When we will see you again?

Cristian: I remember the shows most importantly. The fans in Chile are so amazing, it's an honor to return there every time we do. We had a wonderful experience out first time there and got to visit some of the coastal towns, beautiful beautiful places!!! Thank you to the entire Chilean Ill Niño familia for all your love!

TMR: How is your relationship with Victory Records?

Cristian: We love Victory records. Tony and the entire staff at Victory Records have been very kind to us and we look forward to continuing to work with them!

TMR: What do you think about the state of the music industry?

Cristian: I try not to think about it because that would just give me a headache! It's bad times I can admit that. But honestly the only way to remedy the lack of funding for mid level bands nowadays is to support your favorite ones, support your local bands as well, and be involved in the scene. I know of many people who do not pay for albums but are die hard fans, always at the shows, always engaged with the band and their growth.

TMR: There are plans for a new album in the near future?

Cristian: Absolutely, we are now in the process of writing and sifting through creative ideas.
